Not illustrated. 1899 Excerpt: ...first enclosing 80 copies of different pertoannaks, the other taking notice of some abuses com-mitted in and about Calcutta, and complained of by the Nabob, stating that the Nabob complained that he could not raise revenues to the south of Calcutta on account of the protection given by the English to the inhabitants, mentioning particularly that colours have been sent to several villages about Calcutta as a mark of their being under the protection of the English, and further that our colours were planted at Sukchore, a place formerly rented by the French, in consequence of which the inhabitants refuse to pay revenue to him, that the Photosdar of Hughly also has represented to Colonel Clive that boats frequently pass under English colours with a Bengalee writing but no dustuck, observing we have no right to collect the revenues granted by the treaty till the boundaries are ad-justed, and suggesting strictest exam-ination into the Sookchore affair, as it will be a proper occasion to make a severe example of those concerned in it; letter, dated the 18th instant, from the Chief and Council of Cossimbuzar, enclosing invoices of goods despatched from thence some months ago; letter from Mr. William Watts, requesting leave to come to Calcutta for a few days to settle his private affairs; letter from Captain William James of the Re-venge advising arrival of ten French ships at Pondicherry on the 18th instant; determination to defer the despatch of the Marlbto. to Fort St. George, till we can learn more of the strength and design of the French fleet; an offer by Admiral Pocock to dispose of the Kent to the Company declined; appoint-ment of Mr. Ascanius, senior, as Ac-compt.
